NWCFA squad fly the Welsh flag in the Regions Cup
Coast get first ever Wales win!
Chris Morrell's team got the first ever Wales win in the uefa regions cup when representing the country last week in Estonia making a little bit of Welsh history in the process. Our lower level players faced higher tier teams in Group A from Estonia, Sweden and Kazakhstan who included players who have played for the senior national team, yet were a whisker away from pulling off mission impossible. The win against hosts Estonia was the first Welsh win at ten attempts after Morrells men gained the first ever point in the last tournament 2 years ago. After a bright start from Estonia, Wales dominated the game but against the run of play, a well worked free kick saw Estonia take the lead. The second half was more of the same with the introduction of Ryan Jones working wonders as the pressure eventually told and goals from Duncan Midgley, Ant Parry and Jones made the game safe. That win put Wales within one game of qualification but now faced a incredibly physically strong Kazakhstan team who fielded several international players however despite making several chances in the second half and the players giving their all, Wales just came up short in a one nil defeat. With qualification out of their hands only a win against a top tier team from Sweden would do but two excellent Swedish goals looked to have put them out however the never say die attitude these players have shown for the past two years in qualification, got them back in the game through Midgley late on and in injury time they had a very strong claim for a penalty to perhaps level the tie. Huge thanks also must go to all the support we had back home from people with so many good luck messages. Overall though an amazing effort by the team from the North in a week which included training within the national stadium grounds, playing in a Europa league standard stadium and doing something the players and staff will look back on with pride for the rest of their lives.
