Iwan will be in charge as Aberystwyth Town and Connahs Quay Nomads go head-to-head and will be assisted by Gareth Wyn Jones (Caernarfon) and Lewiss Edwards (Cwmdare). Meanwhile, Rob Jenkins of Guilsfield has been appointed as the 4th official, along with Aaron Wyn Jones (Conwy) as reserve assistant referee.
“Iwan has been one of the most consistent referees of the JD Welsh Premier League over the past few seasons,” said Ray Ellingham, the FAW’s Referees Manager. “Iwan is the model professional both on and off the field and has proved himself not only on the domestic scene but is also gaining valuable experience on the European stage where his performances have matched those back in Wales.”
Iwan is 29 years old and started refereeing in 2003 in the Caernarfon area aged 14. He was selected to be part of the FAW Referee Development and Mentoring Scheme under the North Wales Coast FA.
Promotion to the talent list of Welsh Premier League referees followed in 2013/14 season and he became a full list member on the league the season after.
In 2015, he was selected to take part in the UEFA CORE programme in Switzerland, which educates and prepares young and promising referees to be possible future international referees.
He successfully graduated from CORE with a Diploma. In the same year he was 4th official on the Welsh Cup Final at Latham Park, when The New Saints beat Newtown.
In 2017 he refereed the League Cup final between The New Saints and Barry Town United and was also selected to be on the FIFA International List of Referees in the same year.
Since becoming a FIFA referee, Griffith has been lucky enough to officiate on numerous international matches, including a World Cup qualifier, Europa League Qualifier and U21 Euro Qualifiers. So far he has visited and officiated in 17 different countries since becoming a referee.
Outside of football Griffith enjoys spending time with his family when he isn't training and doing his day job of working for BBC Wales.
Griffith told FAW.Cymru: "I am absolutely delighted and privileged to have been selected to referee the 2018 JD Welsh Cup Final.
"When I started refereeing at 14 years old, I had two dreams - to become a FIFA international referee and to referee the Welsh Cup Final. I am very lucky that both have become true.
"I always look forward to Welsh Cup matches during the season, it's a special competition which brings the best out in teams and referees.
"This will be a special day for my family and all the people who have contributed to my development throughout my career and I'm thoroughly looking forward to the match.
"I would also like to pass on my congratulations to Gareth, Lewiss, Rob and Aaron, who all deserve the same recognition. I am very lucky to have such a solid team on the day."
The NWCFA is very proud of what Iwan has achieved in such a short space of time and who becomes the latest in a long list of NWCFA Referees to have Refereed the Welsh Cup Final. We wish him the very best of luck and hope he has a memorable day to remember.
