The late R Ll Roberts
We take this opportunity to reflect on the contribution, not only to Blaenau Amateurs FC, by Robert but his contribution to the footballing community of Blaenau Ffestiniog.
‘Robin Llew’ as he was affectionately known had an involvement with local football since an early age representing the County School teams and Blaenau Colts. In the early 1970’s Robin together with Clive Roberts established the first Blaenau Youths giving countless up and coming local players an opportunity to taste competitive football.
During the same period Blaenau Reserves was formed again providing local players with the opportunity of competing in the Vale of Conwy League Section B. At that time, the town’s senior team Blaenau Ffestiniog Town, played in the Welsh League (North) and consisted wholly of semi-professional players from Merseyside.
The cessation of Blaenau Reserves led to the formation in 1980 of Blaenau Amateurs FC a new club created to benefit local players. The season 1980/81 saw the club competing in Section A of the Vale of Conwy League. It is on record that Robin was the first Secretary of Blaenau Amateurs FC, a position he held for over 30 years. Robin was also named in the first squad for the match of the 1980/81 season at Conwy British Legion and was a stalwart of the team’s defence for many years captaining the side on numerous occasions.
Robin’s work on behalf of Blaenau Amateurs FC for over 30 years cannot be captured in a few paragraphs, we can only acknowledge with the utmost respect that he lived for this club and we owe it to his memory to manage the club’s future with the same integrity.
A slate plaque was unveiled in the presence of Robin’s family during a short ceremony before our match against Llangefni Town on 16 August.
